NBSTRN is pleased to announce that we have chosen Mei Baker, MD, FACMG as our Spotlight Researcher of the month. Dr. Baker is currently an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and School of Public Health as well as co-director of the Newborn Screening Laboratory at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. She serves on the Newborn Screening Molecular Subcommittee and is a member of the Laboratory Standards and Procedures Subcommittee for the Secretary’s Advisory committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC). Dr. Baker has knowledge and experience in molecular genetics and biochemical genetics and her fields of interest include the application of molecular technology in newborn screening, DNA-based and MS/MS screening for genetic metabolic disorders in newborns, newborn screening for SCID, as well as an interest in the public health of genetics. Dr. Baker is an author of over 14 peer reviewed articles that have been featured in prominent scientific journals such as the American Journal of Human Genetics and Nature Genetics.

 She received her doctorate of medicine from Anhui Medical University in the People’s Republic of China and completed her residency at the Anhui Provincial Hospital. Her training was completed in two different medical specialties, internal medicine and radiology. She has since then been a research associate and assistant professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before becoming an associate scientist at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene at the University of Wisconsin.

Amongst other important research activities, she was a lead scientist in a research group at the University of Wisconsin- Madison that established high-throughput TREC assays to screen newborns for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).  As a result of this effort, in 2008, Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Jeffrey Modell Foundation joined to make Wisconsin the first pilot state to routinely screen for SCID.
