Piero Rinaldo, MD, PhD is a leader in tandem mass spectroscopy quality assurance and world-wide cooperation in the gathering of newborn screening data to establish cut-off values. Dr. Rinaldo is a pediatrician by training and a professor of Laboratory Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He currently serves as Chair of the Division of Laboratory Genetics and Director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology. He holds joint appointments in the Department of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine and in the Department of Medical Genetics. Prior to his current position he held various academic and research positions at Yale University School of Medicine- New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Rinaldo has focused his research on clinical, biochemical, and molecular characterization of newly discovered metabolic disorders, as well as clinical applications of tandem mass spectrometry. His clinical interests include inborn errors of metabolism, particularly mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation disorders, newborn screening, and metabolic disorders misdiagnosed either as child abuse or sudden and unexpected death.

Dr. Rinaldo is a member of ACMG, ASHG, Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (member of the board of directors), the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and the Society for Pediatric Research (editor of Pediatric Research, 1993-1998). He has served on numerous ACMG committees, including Economics of Genetics Services (1994-98), ACMG/ASHG Test and Technology Transfer (1997-2000), Quality Assurance and Laboratory Practice, Professional Practice and Guidelines, the CAP/ACMG Biochemical and Molecular Genetics Resource Committee, and the ACMG/HRSA Expert Panel on standardization of outcomes and guidelines for state newborn screening programs. Furthermore, he has published over 120 scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters on mass spectrometry and inborn errors of metabolism. Dr. Rinaldo obtained his medical and PhD (research doctorate in developmental sciences) degrees at the University of Padova, Italy.
