Funding Opportunity Announcement: Newborn Screening Implementation Program Regarding Conditions Added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP)

A new Funding Opportunity Announcement(FOA), released from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), March 28, 2016, requests applications for the Newborn Screening Implementation Program Regarding Conditions Added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). HRSA will help support 15 state NBS programs with the overall goal to help increase the number of newborns receiving early treatment for Pompe disease, Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), and X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD).

Support of these NBS conditions will help foster the integration of and building capacity for newborn screening, increasing the number of NBS laboratory scientists and short-term follow-up personnel with knowledge and skill in conducting newborn screening and short-term follow-up for Pompe disease, MPS 1, and X-ALD; providing training, education, and sharing of information via a national meeting for the public health community; supporting primary health care providers through education and resources, with special attention to cases with later onset of symptoms; and engaging families in the development and dissemination of educational materials and support mechanisms that are culturally sensitive and family-centric for families who have an infant identified through NBS.

The 15 state NBS programs that may apply to this funding opportunity are those which have not, at the time of these program activities, fully implemented NBS for Pompe disease, MPS 1, and/or X-ALD (but that have demonstrated their readiness to fully implement NBS within 12-24 months). This funding opportunity will be closed on May 27, 2016.
