New ELSI Program Announcements Published
The National Human Genome Research Institute, along with several other NIH Institutes, published three new Program Announcements to encourage research that identifies, examines and addresses the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of advances in genomic research and technology.

Request for Informtion (RFI) in Public Health Genomics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for comments, data, and other information helpful to assess the most important steps in research, policy, and practice for the field of public health genomics in the next five years.
Comments must be received by August 1, 2011. Please submit comments in response to this RFI by clicking here.
Comments are welcome from individuals, groups and organizations. To help inform the assessment process, CDC is requesting public input to the following questions on public health genomics:
(1) What are the most important activities that should be carried out by the public health system in 2012–2017 to apply genomic knowledge to public health goals?
(2) What outcomes specific to public health might be achieved as the result of carrying out these activities?
(3) What policies are needed in order to achieve these outcomes?
(4) What institutions, organizations and agencies need to participate in achieving these outcomes and what roles should they play?
(5) What barriers are anticipated in achieving these outcomes and how might they best be overcome?
The RFI is a part of a strategic planning effort for the field of public health genomics conducted by HHS/CDC with assistance from the Genetic Alliance, the University of Michigan Center for Public Health and Community Genomics, and the Genomics Forum of the American Public Health Association.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) along with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is issuing this Notice to encourage individuals interested in submitting applications relevant to Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Research to submit their applications using the following NIH “Parent” Funding Opportunity Announcements.

Innovative Tools and Therapies for Screenable Disorders (R01), (R21), (R03)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/ organizations that propose research relevant to the basic understanding and development of therapeutic interventions for currently screened conditions and “high priority” genetic conditions for which screening could be possible in the near future. In this FOA, a “high priority” condition is one for which the development of an efficacious therapy would make the condition amenable to newborn screening. This FOA will utilize the R01 funding mechanism and runs in parallel with two FOAs of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-231 and PAR-10-232 that encourage applications under the R03 and R21 mechanisms.
