Iowa: Advancing Newborn Screening

As the 50th anniversary for newborn screening in the U.S. approaches, Iowa is leading the path in adding new conditions to the state’s panel and advancing research for newborn screening. Iowa screens for more than 50 inherited disorders helping to save babies with conditions that would otherwise go undetected. A recent article in a local Iowa newspaper highlights the positive work the state is doing to impact the health of newborns. Along with the actual screening, Iowa is also a participant in the Virtual Repository of Dried Blood Spots (VRDBS). Researchers can request specimens for research directly from the Iowa Newborn Screening Program through the VRDBS. Additional information about Iowa's Newborn Screening Program can also be found at the NBSTRN State Profiles.
