Dr. Alex Kemper, MD, MPH, MS

Dr. Alex Kemper is currently a Professor of Pediatrics and Professor in Community Medicine in the department of Pediatrics at the Duke University School of Medicine. At Duke, he supervises residents in the provision of well-child and acute care. As the Associate Division Chief for Research for the Division of Children’s Primary Care, Dr. Kemper oversees research activities within the childhood obesity fellowship training program. 

Dr. Kemper received his medical training at the Duke University School of Medicine and then went on to finish his residency in pediatrics at Duke’s Medical Center. After medical school, Dr. Kemper completed two fellowships, one in Health Services Research and the other in Medical Informatics, at the University of North Carolina (UNC) - Chapel Hill. He then went on to receive additional training and completed an MPH in Epidemiology and an MS in Biomedical Engineering from UNC.

Dr. Kemper has focused his research on improving the quality of care that children and their families receive. At Duke University, he is studies a large number of conditions, including inborn errors of metabolism conditions, that he can improve quality of patients’ care for. He focuses specifically on strengthening the linkages between primary care, specialty care and public health service. His recent work has been in evaluating the healthcare delivery for children with congenital hypothyroidism. Dr. Kemper directs the Condition Review Workgroup for the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee of Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children.

Dr. Kemper is the deputy editor of Pediatrics as well as a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society, and the Society for Pediatric Research.

The NBSTRN is pleased to honor Dr. Kemper for the valuable work that he has contributed to the genetic service and newborn screening communities.
