John Lantos, MD

Dr. John Lantos is a nationally-known ethicist and the Director of the Children’s Mercy Bioethics Center (CMBC). At Children’s Mercy, he serves as the Director of Pediatrics, and professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Lantos received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine in 1981. He then went on to complete his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, DC. After his residency, Dr. Lantos went on to complete a fellowship in clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago. He completed the fellowship in 1987, and remained at the Pritzker School of Medicine as faculty for over 20 years. He later moved to Kansas City where he was the John B. Chair in Bioethics at the Center for Practical Bioethics.


Dr. Lantos has published over 250 journal papers including 150 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has also written or edited several books in the field of medical ethics, including Neonatal Bioethics, The Lazarus Case: Life and Death Issues in Neonatal Intensive Care; The Last Physician; Walker Percy and the Moral Life of Medicine; and Do We Still Need Doctors? Dr. Lantos is also notably a member of the PCORI Advisory Panel on Clinical Trials as well as an advisor to the American Academy of Pediatrics on Bioethics issues.


Dr. Lantos’ research focuses have centered in bioethics, doctor-patient communication, research ethics, end-of-life care, religion and medicine, and the ethics of clinical trials. His work in bioethics has covered a broad range of issues, including life science research. Notably, his research focused in neonatal and pediatric care has been of great value to the research community. He has recently lead the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) related research portion to the Newborn Sequencing in Genomic Medicine and Public Heath (NSIGHT) grant.
