Michelle Huckaby Lewis, M.D., J.D.

Michelle Huckaby Lewis, MD, JD, has been a faculty member of the Berman Institute at Johns Hopkins University since 2010. Her formal work has been as a pediatrician and an attorney with training in bioethics and health service research.

Dr. Lewis received her undergraduate degree in English and History from Stanford University in 1989. She went on to earn her JD at Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1992. After graduating law school, Dr. Lewis went on to work on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant. She established an interest in Public Health when she was appointed to the White Task Force on Health Care Reform during the Clinton Administration and spent time serving on workgroups related to Health Insurance Reform Medical Malpractice Reform. After her time on Capitol Hill, Dr. Lewis attended Tulane University School of Medicine receiving her MD degree in 2000. She fulfilled her residency in Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2003. Dr. Lewis then went on to complete the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Johns Hopkins University in 2005 as well as the Greenwall Fellowship in Bioethics and Health Policy at Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University in 2007.

Currently, Dr. Lewis works on a grant funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Public Health Law Research program. The grant researches the impact of the Michigan Department of Community Health’s policy requiring parental consent for the research use of residual newborn screening dried blood spots (DBS). Dr. Lewis has been investigating whether Michigan’s policy informs good maintenance of a robust sample collection that leads to well-informed population health-based research. She focuses on ethical issues such as how the state maintains the integrity of its newborn screening program and how to enable informed decision-making by parents.
