Scott Shone, PhD, is currently the Program Manager for the Newborn Screening Laboratory of the state of New Jersey Department of Health. Dr. Shone’s main research focuses on the desire for systematic quality improvement for the newborn screening system.
Dr. Shone graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. He went on to receive his PhD from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD. After receiving his PhD, he completed a Research Fellowship of Emerging Infectious diseases at the Association of Public Health Laboratories. He then went on to become a research scientist at the New Jersey Department of Health.
During his brief career, Dr. Shone has showed outstanding leadership, particularly when the state of New Jersey adopted new technologies and underwent a physical move to a new testing facility. He helped facilitate the transitions and provided his staff with guidance and direction to ease the changes. Furthermore, within months of assuming his position, the NBS Laboratory completed a long-delayed project to upgrade MS/MS testing and increased the menu of detected disorders from 20 to 54.
Aside from his daily responsibilities for the screening results of newborns specimens, Dr. Shone has helped oversee a pilot study of Quality Indicators for which he later was honored with the best power award at the 2011 Association of Public Health Laboratories’ Newborn Screening and Genetics Testing Symposium. In addition, he is currently serving as Chair of APHL’s Newborn Screening Technical assistance and Evaluation Program (NewSTEPs) Steering Committee.Â
Dr. Shone’s New Jersey State Lab is one of more than 70 newborn screening labs in the county that screens newborns within 48 hours of birth. In October of 2012 when Hurricane Sandy flooded most of New Jersey, Dr. Shone demonstrated outstanding management in ensuring the continuity of transportation of specimens. With his dedication, along with his staff, testing continued during the storm.
