Kathryn J. Swoboda, M.D. is currently an associate professor of Neurology and adjunct associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah. She is the director of the Pediatric Motor Disorders Research Program, a program which has a primary mission to further advance research that will contribute to improve care and treatment interventions in pediatric patients with disorder. She directs the Neuromuscular Electrodiagnostic Laboratory at Primary Children’s Medical Center as well as the Principal Investigator for the Project Cure SMA Investigator’s Network, an international multi-center clinical research network that tasked with facilitating the rapid transplantation of new therapies for treatment trials.
Dr. Swoboda received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Washington University. She went on to receive her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. After receiving her M.D., she was an intern for the Evanston Hospital. She then went on to complete a residency from Brigham and Woman’s Hospital. Dr. Swoboda completed a neuromuscular fellowship at the Lahey Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital and then a genetics fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital before going to the University of Utah. She is board certified from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).
Dr. Swoboda’s clinical focus includes the diagnosis and treatment of children and adults with neuromuscular diseases and movement disorders and other inherited neurologic disorders. Her primary research efforts include genotype/phenotype and studies targeting disease pathogenesis and treatment in inherited neuromuscular diseases and movement disorders. She has directed or collaborated in numerous clinical trials and studies in children and adults with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC), and inherited disorders of neurotransmitter biosynthesis and metabolism.
