Dr. Bradford L. Therrell, PhD

Bradford L. Therrell, Jr., PhD, is currently the Director of the National Newborn Screening and Global Resource Center. He retired as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2013 and is currently serving as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Therrell graduated from Mississippi College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then earned his M.S. and PhD degrees in Inorganic Chemistry from Florida State University. Prior to joining NNSGRC, Dr. Therrell previously worked at the Texas Department of Health Bureau of Laboratories for over 28 years, where he served as the Director of the Chemical Services Division. He also served as the Director of the Texas Department of Health laboratory project which helped provide laboratory screening services to individuals with Medicaid. He is also a founding member and a Past President and Secretary of the International Society for Neonatal Screening (ISNS). In 2000, he was awarded the Robert Guthrie Award, which honors newborn screening researchers for their outstanding contributions to the newborn screening world.

Dr. Therrell has also served as the Secretary of Policy of the Council of Regional Networks for Genetics Services and Chairman of its Newborn Screening Committee and has served as Chairman of the Texas Genetics Network Newborn Screening Committee. In addition, he was a long serving member of the U.S. Health and Human Services Select Technical Assistance Team for Newborn Screening, a reviewer for the International Atomic Energy Agency, and participated as a member of several National Subcommittees on newborn screening.

With over 150 scientific articles published in the areas of public health policy, microbiology, newborn screening, and more Dr. Therrell has an extensive research background within the newborn screening community and has helped co-edited 6 books and 7 book chapters and 11 monographs.
