The Virtual Repository of Dried Blood Spots (VRDBS) is an open-source, web-based tool that enables state program personnel to control and manage access to specimens for newborn screening related research. De-identified data on over 3Â million DBS from participating states is centrally located, while the specimens themselves, remain at their state of origin.Each State that participates in the VRDBS is asked to provide basic, de-identified, HIPAA compliant data associated with the DBS they wish to include in the VRDBS. The NBSTRN VRDBS imports that data and makes it accessible to investigators for searching.
The Virtual Repository of Dried Blood Spots (VRDBS) was developed to provide access to residual dried blood spots (DBS) for research purposes. Only approved investigators with genuine research interests will be approved for participation in the VRDBS. Investigators are required to upload their CV/Biosketch, research proposal, funding, and IRB approval information in order to complete the request process.
The VRDBS is compliant with the new regulations mandated by the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act (H.R. 1281).
